Add a little bit gentle soap to one of the bowls and use a soft toothbrush to brush and clean your jewelry, making sure you are carefully getting under and around the prong or claw settings, where sweat, dead skin, lotion and dirt usually build up. When done put the jewelry in the clear water bowl to wash away the soap and dirt and dry out with a lint free cloth. Don’t use any home cleaning solution, toothpaste or other DIY tips to dip or clean your jewelry. All these cleaning methods can destroy some stones and leave small scratches on metal.

About Diamond Carat

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 parts called "points," 1 ct. = 1.00; 1/2 ct. = 0.50. The value of two diamonds of the same weight can vary greatly depending on the color, clarity and especially the cut. While larger diamonds are highly prized, diamonds of equal size may vary widely in value and brilliance, depending on their quality of clarity, cut, and color.

Carat Price & Weight

Diamond price increases dramatically as carat weight increases. Thus the price of two carat diamond ring is more expensive that two carat multiple diamonds in a ring. The reason for this is the rarity of bigger pieces of diamonds compared to the smaller pieces. In fact, only one out of one million (more or less) mined diamonds can create a one carat diamond that is fully cut and polished. Another reason is the wastage during the cutting and polishing process that averaged between 40-60 percent of the original carat weight. Because of rarity of larger diamonds and the effect that rarity has on price, less than one percent of all women will ever own a diamond weighing one carat or more.

About Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity is a quality of diamonds relating to the existence and visual appearance of internal characteristics of a diamond called inclusions, and surface defects called blemishes. The number, size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions can all affect the relative clarity of a diamond. A clarity grade is assigned based on the overall appearance of the stone under ten times magnification. The two most common diamond grading scales are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS). The grading scales for these two organizations are as follows:

Diamond Clarity Categories

The GIA diamond grading scale is divided into six categories and eleven grades.[1] The clarity categories and grades are:

Flawless (FL) diamonds have no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
Internally Flawless (IF) diamonds have no inclusions visible under 10x magnification, only small blemishes on the diamond surface.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS) diamonds have minute inclusions that are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification. The VVS category is divided into two grades; VVS1 denotes a higher clarity grade than VVS2. Pinpoints and needles set the grade at VVS.
Very Slightly Included (VS) diamonds have minor inclusions that are difficult to somewhat easy for a trained grader to see when viewed under 10x magnification. The VS category is divided into two grades; VS1 denotes a higher clarity grade than VS2. Typically the inclusions in VS diamonds are invisible without magnification, however infrequently some VS2 inclusions may still be visible. An example would be on a large emerald cut diamond which has a small inclusion under the corner of the table.
Slightly Included (SI) diamonds have noticeable inclusions that are easy to very easy for a trained grader to see when viewed under 10x magnification. The SI category is divided into two grades; SI1 denotes a higher clarity grade than SI2. These may or may not be noticeable to the naked eye.
Included (I) diamonds have obvious inclusions that are clearly visible to a trained grader under 10x magnification. Included diamonds have inclusions that are usually visible without magnification or have inclusions that threaten the durability of the stone. The I category is divided into three grades; I1 denotes a higher clarity grade than I2, which in turn is higher than I3. Inclusions in I1 diamonds often are seen to the unaided eye. I2 inclusions are easily seen, while I3 diamonds have large and extremely easy to see inclusions that typically impact the brilliance of the diamond, as well as having inclusions that are often likely to threaten the structure of the diamond.

But Why Start With "D"?

Before GIA universalized the D-to-Z Color Grading Scale, a variety of other systems were used loosely, from A, B, and C (used without clear definition), to Arabic (0, 1, 2, 3) and Roman (I, II, III) numbers, to descriptive terms like "gem blue" or "blue white," which are notorious for misinterpretation. So the creators of the GIA Color Scale wanted to start fresh, without any association with earlier systems. Thus the GIA scale starts at the letter D. Very few people still cling to other grading systems, and no other system has the clarity and universal acceptance of the GIA scale.

About Diamond Cuts

Diamond cut is important in both shape and depth. The diamond shape is mostly about personal preference with the round diamonds being the most popular representing about 75% of all diamonds sold. The diamond depth was not determined to be of much importance until 1919 when a mathematician named Marcel Tolkowsky used numerical formulas to achieve the modern brilliant cut. He did this by cutting a diamond so that all light entering the stone followed a controlled path to exit the top of the diamond. It was this discovery that lead to the quality and brilliance in diamonds that we enjoy today.

Deep Cut Diamonds

When a diamond is cut too deep it looses light out of the bottom. The center of the diamond will appear dark. In this image the light is exiting the side of the diamond. This is because the stone is too deep and the light is not being controlled to go out the top. Some diamonds are cut to have maximum weight rather than maximum beauty. This is an example of that kind of diamond and the effect this cutting has on the beauty. Some people are fooled into thinking that they are getting a better diamond simply because the carat weight is higher, but at the expense of brillance and beauty.

Shallow Cut Diamonds

When a diamond is cut too shallow, brilliance is lost and the diamond appears watery, glassy and dark. Looking from the top, it appears to be much larger than it really is. This is called a "fish-eye" or sometimes a "swindle cut," so called because you can take a diamond of .80 ct with this type of spread cut and make it appear as a 1.00ct diamond. Some people are fooled into thinking that they are getting a larger diamond for the money.

When a round brilliant diamond has been cut to precise angles and proportions, with superb symmetry and polish, visual patterns begin to emerge. A well-cut and well-proportioned diamond allows the maximum amount of light to enter, reflect and return to your eye. The nice reflection and sparkle are also called the "fire of the diamond." In this image, you can see that the light is going in the top, traveling around the diamond interior and exiting out the top of the stone. No matter where the light enters this diamond, the light will go out the top. This is a brilliant and beautiful stone. Ideal cut diamonds are always more beautiful!!!

The first time she came in to set a missing small diamond in her band. She is one of this people that you instantly feel comfortable to start a conversation, so we had a small talk about jewelry, family, places and what not. Few days later, when she came in to pick up her ring, she said they’ll be celebrating their 27th anniversary soon and planning on another proposal and new rings. She wanted to pick her new ring and bands and wanted him to surprise her with the proposal. She tried on some rings and band, before deciding on the new setting for her original diamond and two anniversary bands to go with the ring. And all that time we talked and talked, sharing these little stories and thoughts about kids, hobbies, politics and jewelry, getting to know each other. Then she left saying that her husband will come later to order the rings. She didn’t want to know when he’s ordering or picking up the rings, she wanted a surprise proposal.

When he came in, tall and quiet, as she described him and order the rings, you could tell this long time love story is still alive. He orders the rings and they both visited us again the next day to pick a new ring for him. Few weeks after when he picked up the rings he still didn’t know how he is going to propose, but he promise to keep us posted. The proposal took place weeks later. He knew she will see the charge on the credit card, since she is the one who take care of the credit card balance, so he needed some time to go by for her to forget about it. He did want to surprise her. It ended up as a beautiful and emotional surprise proposal at the Washington Park Arboretum (he knew she loves flowers!) where during the hike, he suddenly stopped, turn to her and declaim the poem he wrote for their second proposal:

Winter.

So cold.

So dreary.

So much longing--unfulfilled.

Spring.

Is it real?

Is there such a thing?

Hints of spring--remembered?

Or just imagined?

Can there even be such joy?

Or is there only this?

Frozen, colorless, lifeless, lonely.

Then…

A glimpse.

A bit of color exposed.

Will it last?

Is it a sign of what's coming,

Or a simply vain attempt to escape this present?

Pearls are unique in the gemstone world, as they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. Natural pearls are formed inside pearl oysters in freshwater or saltwater. Natural pearls are rare and expensive, due to environment changes which reduce their numbers as well as the dangers of harvesting them. Cultured pearls are grown and harvested using maritime farming methods both in fresh and salt water, to the same level of quality. Natural pearls are found in the Persian Gulf, Australia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Japan. Cultured pearls are in wider use, mostly in Japan.

Pearls have been wildly popular spanning many cultures for several thousand years. No one knows when the first pearls were found, or by who, but they have been adored by mankind for thousands of years for their shine and soft, milky appearance.

Pearls have been known as a favorite among royals throughout the ages. Finding natural pearls at sea has always been rare, and so they came to symbolize opulence and status.

During the time of Julius Caesar only royalty wore jewelry set with pearls, and they were used as prestigious hair ornaments during the Renaissance. Pearls, much like diamonds, are subject to grading according to their size, luster, shape, color and clarity.

Because pearls are natural organic substances, they occur in a wide variety of shapes, many of which are quite unique and interesting. Every pearl has a slightly different shape. The round pearls you most commonly see are by no means the only shape in which pearls are found! Indeed, perfectly round pearls are actually quite rare. This is because the eventual shape of the pearl is determined by a number of highly variable factors, which occur inside the oyster as the pearl is developing.

The most familiar colors are white and cream (a light yellowish brown). Black, gray, and silver are also fairly common, but the palette of pearl colors extends to every hue.

How to take care of your pearls jewelry?

Pearls should be kept in a cloth – preferably silk – satchel, and should avoid contact with sharp metals or gems, which may cause surface abrasions.

It is also advised to keep pearls from coming into contact with perfume, makeup and detergents, which may dull their luster. Pearls cannot be worn while bathing or exercising. It is also best to clean pearls with a gentle cloth after they have been worn, to remove any potentially harmful residue.

Pearls are usually threaded on silk, with a small, separating knot between them, to avoid both abrasions and the chances of losing them, in the event of a necklace tearing. The silk thread should be periodically replaced.
