How to Start Designing a Custom Engagement Ring: A Step-by-Step Guide
Designing a custom engagement ring is exciting, but for many couples, it's also something they've never done before. One of the first questions we hear is, "Where do we even start?"

After more than 40 years in the diamond industry, I've learned that the best engagement ring isn't simply the most expensive one it's the one that reflects your story, your style, and your budget.
Step 1: Start With the Right Questions
Before looking at diamonds or settings, we spend time getting to know you.
Some of the questions we'll ask include:
- Will the proposal be a surprise?
- What styles does your partner like?
- Natural diamond or lab-grown diamond?
- What budget feels comfortable?
- Is there a particular diamond shape you love?
- Do you have inspiration photos?
There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is to understand what matters most to you before we begin.
Step 2: Choose the Center Diamond
The center diamond is the heart of the ring.
Many people believe they simply need to choose a carat weight, color, and clarity. While those are important, they don't tell the whole story.
At Redmond Diamond Center, we compare several diamonds side by side. We look beyond the grading report to evaluate brilliance, transparency, light performance, and overall beauty.
Sometimes a diamond with slightly lower clarity can appear more beautiful than one with a higher grade. That's why seeing multiple diamonds together is so important.
Step 3: Select the Perfect Setting
Once you've chosen the diamond, it's time to design the ring around it.
Together we'll discuss:
- Solitaire
- Yellow, white, or rose gold
- Platinum
- Cathedral or low-profile setting
- Hidden halo
- Pavé or plain band
- Wedding band compatibility
Every decision helps create a ring that fits your partner's style while remaining comfortable for everyday wear.
Step 4: Creating the CAD Design
Once the design is finalized, we create a detailed 3D computer model (CAD).
This allows you to see the ring before it's made.
At this stage, changes are easy. If you'd like the band slightly thinner, the basket lower, or the prongs adjusted, we can make those refinements before production begins.
Step 5: Crafting Your Ring
After the CAD design is approved, your ring moves into production.
The ring is cast, polished, and carefully finished before the diamond is professionally set.
Every detail is inspected to ensure the finished ring matches the approved design.
How Long Does It Take to Make a Custom Engagement Ring?
One of the most common questions we hear is about timing.
Most custom engagement rings are completed in approximately 2–3 weeks after the design is approved.
If you're planning a proposal for a special date, we recommend starting the process several weeks in advance to allow time for selecting the perfect diamond, reviewing the design, and completing the ring without rushing.
